This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to…L.A. Witch October 16, 2021

Mentioned before the way in which certain forms of music appear to have an almost inexhaustible capacity to reinvent themselves. Small, almost imperceptible, variations and somehow a form of alchemy takes place wherein that which should be overly familiar suddenly takes on a new and striking sound. And this keeps happening, year after year, decade after decade.

Exhibit A? Los Angeles trio L.A. Witch (Sade Sanchez, Irita Pai and Ellie English) somehow work on the perimeters of the musical terrain mapped out by groups like Brian Jonestown Massacre, the JAMC and others with a punky garage rock approach (there’s an hint, more than an hint, of Gun Club or Romeo Void in there) and throw in a number of other influences, a bit of desert rock, perhaps some goth, country, some movie atmospherics.

Check out their second album “Play With Fire” from 2020. It works best perhaps on Fire Starter and the fantastic Motorcycle Boy. But it works with near enough all the tracks – check out the range on album closer Starred or I Wanna Lose. Laconic vocals, a guitar that can let rip or offer a countryish or surf twang, and propelled along by the bass and drums. So much happening and some really interesting sounds in there – drones, skittery percussion, squalls of feedback, staccato guitar and bass.

Great album.

Good stuff. Stumpbled across them a few weeks ago, and yeah, what you said 🙂

Ah, that’s interesting and good to hear. There’s a lot more in the mix than there seems to be at first listen. Sade Sanchez was I think in drone bands and there’s something of that going on.
