A good judgement… October 19, 2021

…but interesting framing of the coverage of this particular story:

A man who used a wooden post to strike a woman on the head during an anti-lockdown rally last year has been jailed for two years.

Judge Martin Nolan described the attack by Louth man Michael Quinn on Ruth O’Rourke, also known as Izzy Kamikaze, in September 2020 as cowardly.

He said the behaviour of Quinn and his associates after the attack was reprehensible.

No mention though of the political aspect above and beyond the rally.

As I an neither Irish nor resident in Ireland I do not know on which side the various parties were, although I suspect Ms Kamikaze was a protester and Mr Quinn and his associates were on the side of ‘law and order’.However I may have it all wrong, could anyone enlighten me?

Ooops, that last comment didn’t work. Here’s another:

https://gcn.ie/national-party-member-pleads-guilty-assault-izzy-kamikaze/

National Party member Michael Quinn has pleaded guilty to the assault on LGBTQ+ activist Izzy Kamikaze that left her with a severe head wound. The Louth man entered the plea in the Criminal Courts of Justice today, June 21, just over 9 months on from the original incident.

Kamikaze, who was observing an anti-mask rally near the Dáil last year when she was attacked, published a tweet confirming the news:

Thank you all for enlightening me,gratitude to Izzy for her brave stance and commiserations to Ireland that you are infected by same pernicious nonsense that affect the rest of us.

Very touchy wording from the RTE report. If you’re the kind of person to skim through such articles you could easily come away with the impression that some radical antifa has been convicted after braining an innocent Tory.

Well, the initial Garda response at the time suggested it wasn’t as serious an assault as it in fact was, but their tone changed when video footage was highlighted on twitter.

I saw that, and agree. And having it on Twitter was one way of forcing them to take it as seriously as it needed to be taken.

It’s been a feature that Guards, the Irish Times and RTÉ have gone out of their way not to identify the groups responsible. Compare and contrast with the treatment meted out to leftists and republicans for much more minor incidents.

I was thinking that were there a hint of SF, or indeed any left groups, involved there would be mention of it. But remarkable to read RTÉ, the IT, the Examiner and only GCN – of the reports I read mentioned the NP aspect.

Is there anything being done in schools to encourage vaccine takeup. This is nearly stalled. Surely it should be pushed by teachers in say Civics and religion classes. Unvaccinated people are putting their health and the health of others in danger. Maybe telling students that the various alternative exam options will not be there. Tough that you did not get your college place because of Covid illness.
The department, the schools and both the teacher unions and parents councils should be doing something to encourage vaccine takeup.
The hospitals are filing again. Aside from those with Covid, there are those whose procedures are delayed yet again.
And we are due a combined flu epidemic, last years added to this year.
