The article doesn’t say it, but it’s clear Labour are still doing polling/focus groups in the red wall constituencies that are telling them: ‘Don’t say a word against Brexit!’ They daren’t, or think they’d daren’t, oppose other ‘patriotic’ policies for the same reason. If you read a lot about UK and US politics, it strikes you more and more that Starmer is Biden and Bernie Sanders is Corbin. (I know there are a million differences, but I’m talking about the policy dynamics between their respective factions).

The analogy works in several ways but it breaks down on one crucial aspect – Biden worked to create a coalition that included the left. And it might not be very impressive to most of us here, but on the basics he’s made some efforts to hold that coalition together.
Starmer seems to be trying to get elected by attacking the left with far more conviction than he attacks the Tories. And whatever the moral rights or wrongs of that, it seems to me to be a crap electoral strategy, justified only by the fact that something like it worked once, a quarter of a century ago.

Cowardice. Plain and simple. Can’t bring themselves to risk defending refugees even when it probably wouldn’t hurt them. I guess asylum seekers can’t vote.

Back in the early aughts there was an episode of the Mark Thomas Product tv show about how the New Labour government was treating asylum seekers and refugees. At the start of the episode he said that if anyone in the audience still liked the Labour party, by the end of the episode they’d be so disgusted they’d want to leave. At the end of the episode, Mark Thomas collected labour party cards from people in the audience who were members of the labour party and cut them up for them.

And re Nicola Sturgeon’s renewed push for an independence referendum for Scotland, where Labour has *one* solitary MP out of 59 (the SNP has 45), we have Starmer’s loyal lieutenant David Lammy MP standing four square with fellow unionist Tories and LibDems.

Starmer obviously thinks that clever clogs middle-class Labour votes in safe-ish urban seats (me basically) will think ‘well he can’t really be a racist’ whereas thicko working class voters in those horrible small towns will hear a fake dog whistle. It might be worth his while looking at the Green votes in constituencies like mine at the locals…..
