David Lammy backtracks . . .

Pressure from inside as well as outside might have been felt (even if the turnabout by Lammy took three days).

Lammy backtracked once Starmer said there would be no disciplinary action for Labour MPs attending pickets.
Does make you wonder at the mentality of the English in power.
They do love punishing/disciplining whenever they get the chance

The most recent IT podcast is well worth a listen, Una Mullaly debating Neale Richmond following a recent Mullaly article on FG ‘not getting it’. Richmond started off very calm but ended up regularly interrupting Mullaly, calling her writing about FG ‘obsessive’, while also bringing a printed-out stack of her past articles and meticulously counting FG mentions within them!

Hmmmm… Richmond needs to look at his own obsessions. And isn’t it strange? I’d have thought that a forensic interest in our political parties is necessary. But clearly not him. Sounds good though.

Did no one look at that photo before the poster was designed and think…hmmmm, what message does that send? I love the expressions, particularly on the seated woman.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jul/01/starmer-allies-reject-claims-leftwingers-blocked-from-standing-for-labour

They pointed to the longlisting of avowedly leftwing commentator Paul Mason for Stretford and Urmston, in Greater Manchester, as proof that candidates from that wing of the party were not all being vetoed.

I’m sure that will satisfy the left after recent news from him.

Are any UK-based people attending the Marxism 2022 festival in London this weekend?

https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/marxism-2022-a-festival-of-socialist-ideas-tickets-274917905857

I’ll miss Saturday as I won’t be missing Clare vs Kilkenny, but might get a day ticket for the Sunday.

Thanks Gearóid for that. I’ll throw up a link. I think that is fantastic that they’re doing a stream on this. Excellent.

Ireland Manager Vera Pauw’s recent revelations are remarkable. First mentioned in 2011, she was raped as a young player in the Netherlands and endured abuse and sexual assault as a player and coach in Dutch football. The Dutch football association didn’t help her at all.

Now she comes trodden down the path of defiance, yet again. No surprises, then, that female footballers are doing so well under her guidance.

I’ve just harvested 36 heads of garlic: 29 Mesidrome bought from Quickcrop.ie and 7 of an unknown variety from cloves off bulbs bought in the supermarket. I planted 32 heads of mesidrome on 20 October and 8 of the unknown variety on 31 October.

The advice is to not plant cloves from shop-bought bulbs because they are usually suited for growing in a different climate and won’t do so well here, but these had been grown in Lusk, so I took a punt.

Both sets are mixed in size: some as big as you’d get in a supermarket, others that I expect would be diverted to the food processing or catering trade of they were harvesterd by a commercial grower.

No sign of white rot, but I also need to check for leaf miner infestation.
If I can store then properly, this harvest should supply me for the year.

Just planted some brussel sprouts – on the plate on Christmas day please God. And some beetroot which is a first for me. We’ll see how it goes. I’ve been collecting all kinds of nuts and seeds from trees and planting them in pots with a view to planting a forest down the country some day. The best time to plant a tree is twenty years ago, the second best time is now.

I spent a few weekends putting in new no-dig beds, made of railway sleepers to replace the old scaffolding planks I had before (three degrees and Paddy still ends up navvying in England …). Had the first beetroot from the beds last week (only lovely) and a few peas straight from the pod this morning. Plenty of rhubarb at the minute and beans seem to be growing slow but steady. Should have a decent crop of pumpkins if growth so far is anything to go by. Brassica seedlings went out last week and I’ll be transplanting the leeks soon. Should have a decent crop of kale come February.

Independence Day greetings to yc and all lovers of American freedom. Brits out!
Some family news son… your younger brother (the hurler, not the poet) is going out with a California girl, over here studying. We approve. From a family of sparks (she says sparkies).

Da’
Appreciate the Independence Day greetings. Aside from the small personal blessings which I’ve been blessed with it seems like a dark day, this is certainly as WBS noted, a time when rights are being taken away. But I’ve got my family and my dogs. A cold beer and some good cigars. I suppose taking a day to appreciate what we still have and gain strength from that is in order. But things will get worse before they get better, so folks better get their shit in a pile.

As for Californans, better they are in Dublin than Denver. We’re overrun with them here. We do call them sparkies here. But the real question is what IBEW local (international brotherhood of electrical workers) do they hail from?

What IBEW do they hail from…

A bit early to ask. If she sticks around I will. She’s a good kid though. Your lil bro will be a lucky guy if he holds onto her. Yankee stay here!

“What IBEW LOCAL”, as in their local union hall. Here in town it’s LU (local union) 68. And so on and so forth. It’s never too early to know if the people in your home come from good union stock or class traitors.

I just done some googling on this which is pretty sad really. Anyway I didn’t see any of the family name on the IBEW website I looked at. But I did see that one of the officers of the local is Khalid “Slim” Saleem. God bless America.

Maybe not so much ‘professing their loyalty’ but more ‘staying for now until we see what way the wind blows’?
