A run in Europe August 11, 2022

There’s something magical about a European run. Trips to places you may normally not go to, matches against supposed better opposition, matches against teams you know little or nothing about.

It’s been a great year so far for Rovers, Pat’s and Sligo. Rovers through to a group stage, with a chance to make the Europa League over the next fortnight against Ferencváros of Hungary. Pat’s after a great result away to CSKA Sofia will hopefully get through tonight on Tallaght. Sligo scraped past Bala but were magnificent in beating Motherwell in both legs. Vikingur were a step too far for them.

For Rovers it means that we’ll probably be playing Thursday, Sunday for the rest of the season. A big test for the squad but one I hope they are able for. Last Tuesday Chris McCann, Jack Byrne and Pico Lopes were all missing. Hopefully they are fit for the group stages.

We’ll either be in the Europa or The Conference League. I think that draw is being made on the 26th of August. We’ll see who we get, the dates and so on. Then hopefully go to one or two of the away games.

There’s some talk in the papers of the games being in the Aviva. I’d hate that and would much prefer Tallaght. Financially though a tie against Arsenal or Manchester United would probably sell out in the Aviva, although sadly Rovers fans would be in the minority. A few years ago we played Liverpool in a friendly there and enjoyed singing “Does your Telly know you’re here?”.

Speaking of Telly, it’s ridiculous that a lot of the matches haven’t been on RTE TG4 or Virgin Media. I’ve been at the games in Tallaght but watched the Skupje match and Sligos home game v Motherwell on LOITV.

It was ever thus with TV ,but surely in whatever deal the FAI do for coverage of the International team, Irish clubs European games should be covered too.

I don’t think the FAI have anything to do with UEFA club competition TV rights? Isn’t that negotiated directly with UEFA by networks?

Good performances this season in Europe alright, though was disappointed with Pats today. Only worry is a positive feedback loop of finances developing for Shamrock Rovers that will turn them into Rosenberg. Anyway, it’s all a distant dream for Limerick-born fans like me!
