Phone news August 13, 2022

Interesting to see another mobile arrive in the market pitched at a mid-price range and with some semblance of environmental thinking going on. British technology startup Nothing has the Nothing Phone 1. It’s not exactly revolutionary – though there’s a series of light bars on the back of the device that light up in different patterns to indicate who is calling (though not for texts). In terms of sustainability the Guardian notes:

Nothing rates the battery for at least 800 full charge cycles while maintaining at least 80% of its original capacity. The Phone 1 is generally repairable in the UK and the battery is replaceable by Nothing.

The Phone 1 is made of 100% recycled aluminium with more than 50% of its plastic components made from bio-based or recycled materials. The company plans to publish an environmental impact report for the phone, which it says has a carbon footprint of 58.5Kg CO2 equivalent.

How does the measure up to Fairphone, which is presumably the leader in sustainable mobiles?

From the news coverage it seems like this phone is meant to fill a gap in the market for tech nerds, rather than take over the mass market. So not a helpful solution to the environmental and social damage caused by the tech industry. It’s nice to see a small competitor advocate sustainability, but unless the android-apple duopoly is broken up it won’t have much of an effect. I don’t know if there’s a market based solution for this.
