Defending the indefensible on evictions – redux March 16, 2023

Gerard Howlin writes in The Irish Times in defence of the lifting of the eviction ban.
Lifting the eviction ban marks the start of the general election campaign. It immediately framed the politics of March.
The Dáil isn’t sitting this week because of St Patrick’s Day. It will be next week before a Sinn Féin motion to retain the ban is debated and voted on. It will be early April before the consequences of the policy change are felt.
There will be no tsunami of evictions, only a drip feed, punctuated by the occasional high-profile ejection from their home of families with few options about where to go. Politically, this will run on and on.
Hold on!

There – fixed that for him.
It’s an interesting piece because it goes around and around, evading a central point. The state has not build social property for many many decades and had no housing policy worth the name in those many many decades.
So so much wrong with that but you get the feeling if Sinn Féin want to do this or that we’ll do the opposite just to show them up.
It’s as if Sinn Féin are responsible for this.

Which is an amazingly counter-productive way to organise ones politics. Saw a bit of that with Labour in the 2000s and where really did it get them?
