The Dublin Central Local Elections and byelection Promotional Material – David Geary of the Green Party… Part 12 of a continuing series. May 26, 2009

A first from the Green Party. So far I haven’t been troubled by them, bar a poster for the candidate across the road from my house. Let me allow the person who forwarded this to me to put it in their own words:

This is the only thing I’ve got from the Green Party. I usually get a huge amount of leaflets through the door, and canvassers calling, as I live near a crossover point for the parties which divide the constituency up between east and west. I’ve even occasionally got stuff meant for Cabra Glasnevin candidates, so I was surprised that we weren’t seeing any Green Party literature.

It was put through the door while I was in the house, without the bell being rung. I’ve noticed quite a few lying on pavements and half out of letterboxes around the area. That’s usually an indication that someone is being paid to do the leafleting and not making a thorough job of it (Nial Ring and Tom Stafford’s stuff is always worst for this), but sometimes it’s just a mark of inexperienced leafleters.

But anyway, the leaflet itself:

There is an issue in Stoneybatter and a few other places around the Council’s decision to remove most of the dog dirt bins, which were on lamp posts at the ends of streets, and meant for people to clean up after their dogs. As a cutback measure DCC removed the bins but left the signs up, so now dog walkers are expected to clear up after their dogs and then take the shit home with them. Of course, they don’t, and in areas where people don’t have front gardens, this means you have to be very thoughtful when you step out of your front door.

The Green Party response to this situation is innovative, to say the least. He doesn’t say whether he thinks the City should fine people, restore the bins, or take any measures against dog walkers. Nor does he say whether he will continue to pay for the pooper scooper bags after the elections.

There’s also an issue in some places around street lighting, maybe he’ll be buying torches and leaving them in the shops for us when the evenings get dark…

More from Sinn Féin. A pretty elaborate offering from Ruadhán MacAodháin of Sinn Féin, candidate for the local elections. As the person who very kindly scanned this for me noted, they like the “Dinosaur Developments” line.

Niall Ring, ex-Fianna Fáil, perhaps heroically missing the point (as someone noted earlier in the week) on this leaflet here…

Interesting leaflet, particularly compared to the previous one from PB4P. Some concentration on local issues, but a broad sweep including national ones. Note the call for voters to Vote No. 1 for Joe Higgins for Europe and No.1 for Maureen O’Sullivan in the by-election. Also note the use of the word ‘socialist’ in the “Who are People Before Profit”…

I’m very grateful to the person who passed this material on… here is the Christian Solidarity Party candidate in Dublin Central….worth a read, not least in light of the appearance on the Vincent Browne show earlier this week (of which more briefly soon)…

Here’s a clever piece of literature from Sinn Féin which seeks to maximise – or perhaps more accurately prod to life – voter knowledge about their candidates in the local, by-election and European Election contests. So we see a clear emphasis on Christy Burke in the by-election, and then on the reverse “1 day 3 elections” promoting Christy, Mary Lou McDonald and Ruadhán MacAodhán. The comment about Tony Gregory is – for once from a politician putting themselves forward in DC – far from inaccurate.

Latest latest. This is from Claire O’Regan of the Labour Party. Two thoughts strike me, firstly that there is no mention of left wing, social democracy or socialism (something, incidentally, that is true of Maureen O’Sullivan’s leaflet too), and secondly the emphasis on ‘green’ issues. Odd for a constituency which has never been particularly rewarding for the Green Party (BTW, does anyone have any GP literature they could forward to me?).

I’ve a lot more pieces of material which I’ll post up over and after the weekend.

You know, it took me a while to realise I hadn’t posted this up. Wood for trees and so on. Anyhow, here it is, the leaflet used by the Gregory Group candidate Maureen O’Sullivan.

Another week, another leaflet, this our second from the Workers’ Party. I note that they appear to be contesting the by-election too.

It is certainly closer to the overall WP identity than the previous one.

The Dublin Central Local Elections and By-election Promotional Material – Mick Keegan of Labour… Part 5 of a continuing series. April 22, 2009

Another leaflet, this week our first from the Labour Party. It’s an impressive piece of work in terms of sheer size spread across two A4 pages front and back but folded in 3! It’s for Mick Keegan, aspirant Councillor for Cabra Glasnevin.

Joe, my old comrade from back in the day sent it through (for which many thanks – I wasn’t able to pick up the envelope until after Easter so apologies for the delay in posting it up). He makes one very interesting observation about the leaflet which I’ll leave people to work out for themselves.

Again, this concentrates entirely on the local with no hint of a national aspect other than the branding.
