Sunday Independent Stupid Statement of the Week May 16, 2010

What is the world coming to? A few bits and pieces to annoy this week, but to be honest, I failed to spot anything so stupid that it is worthy of highlighting. Essentially, all this week’s writing from our favourite right-wing commentators were too banal to discuss much, especially now that a decision has obviously been taken to lay off the unions. John Drennan came close for hyperbole, as did Shane Ross and Dan O’Brien for their reactions to the idea of the EU setting the agenda for individual states’ budgets, but basically the whole right-wing commentariat needs to raise its game if it is not just to bore us.

What about an honorable mention for Jody Corcoran’s saying that since the economy has now been fixed, we should stop protesting?

(To be fair, nowhere near the most stupid thing that Corcoran has ever said; it’s a bit like when Scorsese finally got his Oscar for “The Departed”).

Like you say Paul, having hit such heights in the past, I feel let down by Corcoran.

Not an actually existing stupid statement, but I did notice that the TV advert for their Scandal supplement covers a range of sectors — politics, the church, sport, business, etc. — but not the media and its relentless imbalance of the economy and social justice.

You’re correct: I mis-typed “of” for “on” 🙂

The Eoghan Harris piece deserves a mention, as it reveals almost all his classic traits: sucking up to power, in this case praising Cowan’s attempts at justification last week.
Settling personal scores with Vincent Browne and Fintan O’Toole (remember O’Toole saw him off on Today FM in 2007, and his acolyte Gerry Gregg chickened out of a debate with O’Toole on Browne’s TV3 show last month) with a miaow point about O’Toole not being a great public speaker.
Finally and most importantly dismissing all opposition to the government as middle-class: led by ‘third-level trots’.
