Tory education reforms stress handing over control of schools to those willing to fund them, and freedom for schools to teach what they want. Is this where we’re heading?

Speaking of those willing to fund schools, a story on RTE’s Morning Ireland today about a TD who is stepping in to fund a replacement teacher in a small Kerry netional school which had its allocation cut from 3 teachers to 2 due to the cutbacks. No doubt this will be paraded as a generous and decent act by some, and as a cynical vote catcher by others, but the principle remains that state provision of education as a human right is being eroded to become an act of charity. And of course the replacement teacher won’t have the same employment contract as the teacher who was cut. Nasty stuff.

If the region you live in has tornadoes frequently,
then building a storm cellar might not be a bad idea. Home
improvement will become increasingly needed for householders if they’re thinking about selling their apartment
in future. So do not use that as a factor when determining if
this is a home improvement project that you want to start.
