Watching the Taoiseach’s departure…  June 13, 2017

…it was an odd experience. He’s clearly a decent enough person. And he had the good sense to look embarrassed by much of the proceedings. Yet this is a man whose policies have been deeply destructive to some, whose legacy is hard to discern because what is it? It’s an odd thing, this mixture of politics, policy, ideology and personality. An exuberant Eamon Ryan made a good point re massive rewriting of history in terms of the last ten years – though even Ryan’s perspective was very much his own when he spoke of ten years ago.

And then a brief hour was over, or not quite an hour, and there was Kenny at the doors leading out of the chamber with people coming up to shake his hand – at least it seemed some SF TDs included. What a difference two decades makes.

And then… that was that.

12 o’clock Wednesday, new Taoiseach.

I’ll make no excuses for him. “Decent enough”. Damning with faint praise I’d have thought.

Odd character all the same.
His fitness and youthful appearance is remarkable for a man of his generation. And oddly maybe, the only taoiseach I can remember to leave office at a time of his choosing, untouched by scandal.

This obviously pales in comparison to real issues but it’s hard to know what those like Mick Barry and Ruth Coppinger who were asked today to comment on the Taoiseach’s legacy should do. They have spent their life in pursuit of certain goals with an ideology complete at odds with Kenny’s so I don’t think they mean to be cruel but they’re not gonna abandon principle even on a day like today. The girls who was sectioned today gave them no choice but to bring up the failures of this government and the previous one.

Absolutely, I think RC was grand yesterday, exactly the right response, and avoiding the fawning. Gerry Adams likewise.
