Another armed campaign ends..? June 14, 2017

In amongst the news of the UK General Election this may have been missed, from the IT last week:

A group saying it represents the leadership of the Continuity IRA has stated it is to end its armed campaign.
In a statement to the Limerick Leader on Thursday, which included a recognised code word, the group said it would disband over the next three months. It said the decision was taken in recent weeks.

But some analysis suggests that it is only a faction in CIRA – not islandwide. Nonetheless interesting given CIRA’s continuity with those who broke with SF in the 80s and their steadfast allegiance to armed struggle.

Saw that. Meant to mention it in the Signs of Hope.

This is not from CIRA but rather the Limerick faction allied to CRSF, though they have not confirmed that it was them either.

Seems to be the local CIRA faction in Munster that was gradually pushed out/broke away due to too close links with criminality. Specifically drug-dealing protection and racketeering. Not clear yet if the claim is correct. There’s more to the story. I hope to write up something about in next week or so.

Something in the bit I read that said that these were the same lads (not being ageist but some in their seventies iirc) who were arrested in a house in Newry after their plotting and scheming meetings had been recorded for months on end. Included lads from Limerick but also from sth Armagh area, again iirc.

In fairness to them, not a century on from the 1880s Fenian dynamiting campaign (ultimately being directed at the time by British agents, as we now know) and PIRA had apparently forgotten the lesson too.

This is the most right wing of the nationalist micro groups. The last edition of their Saoirse Nua asserts that Ireland is a “Christian country” and complains of crimes against the Irish people. What crimes? Not Bloody Sunday or anything like that. No, their gripe is against the “mongralisation” of the Irish by immigration from Africa, Asia and Eastern Europe.

Could you please provide the exact quote and source for this:

I despise all the disso groups but would be very surprised if they uttered the mongralisation statement above.

Here is the exact quote:

“The false building boom which mushroomed in the first decade of this century was fuelled by mass immigration into the Free State. Every government agency was deployed in encouraging Africans, Asians and East Europeans to flood into Ireland. The 1916 Proclamation says that the right of the Irish people to the ownership of Ireland and the unfettered control of Irish destinies was a sovereign and indefeasible right which can never (be) estinguished except by the destruction of the Irish people. This treachery began with the sale of Irish passports to the Arab sheiks by Charles Haughey at one million a piece. A generation later the Free State Army Number 1. Band is on hand to play suitable airs to celebrate the mongrelisation of Irish society.”

So they’ve announced the end of their armed campaign (whoever they are). If they’re the same bunch who came out with the racist stuff quoted above, presumably they’ll continue on this ‘political’ path while their armed wing is stood down.
