Socialist Workers Network February 12, 2018

At its 2018 conference members of the Socialist Workers Party decided to change its name to the Socialist Workers Network.

It follows logically from the growing success of People Before Profit—a 32 county socialist organisation that Socialist Worker helped found—which has been highly successful in winning adherents all around Ireland.

The change in name to Socialist Workers Network reflects a decision to focus on building People Before Profit, and within that to win and educate as many members as possible in revolutionary socialist politics.

To that end, the Socialist Workers Network will be operating as a component part of People Before Profit and, more occasionally, as an independent external force.

The SWP is no more…. Will SWN be active or just a publishing house?

What does this mean ‘more occasionally, as an independent external force.’ In what way as an external force?

And the thought arises, could there be other ‘component’ parts within PBP competing for other brands of socialism?

Could this reflect a certain disenchantment and decline in SWP (rather than PBP) growth after the recent scandal ?

Could the leaders of Solidarity (not dominated by the SP) and the leaders of PbP (not dominated by the SWN) explain their differences and why these differences do not allow them to form a common organisation.

I wonder were there more non aligned than SWP members in PBP? Certainly the printed leaflet output of the SWP has dwindled in recent times and often there is not even SWP literature at PBP stands at protests.
I wonder too is the aim to almost ‘soften’ the PBP brand but distancing the SWP from it. Are they trying to recruit some of the growing band of ex SF Cllrs ?

Janey. Not sure. Some time in the early nineties? The late eighties?

A change in name doesn’t mean a change in nature. I’ll stick to Own Brand.

I see People Before Profit Alliance has also dropped Alliance from it’s name too.

There’s some of them that wouldn’t come from a Republican Tradition that may be tempted alright.
Interesting too that PBP advertise themselves as a 32 county socialist organisation.

I noted that for the PBP/AAA, but were there other groupings in that alliance or just individuals? and are they now one and not just allied?

Did the SWP (now, SWN) ever contest elections in its own right or sign up to the Oireachtas Register of Political Parties? I genuinely can’t remember. Or maybe it was before my time.

If I recall correctly, a few years ago both SWP and PBPA were registered. My recollection is that Ailbhe Smyth was a designated signatory/certifying officer (or whatever it’s called) for PBPA but not SWP.

Thanks, I was curious about that. I think I remember a few SWP candidates in local elections but not in general. At least not around here. The SWP and SP always seemed so marginal, though I did vote for the latter when they stood on their own platform. Seems like ancient history now.

The SWP contested Local and General Elections under their own guise. They contested the 1999 and 2004 Local Elections and the 1997 and 2002 General Elections. They failed to win a seat.
I think it was around 2005 that The Davitt League was formed, this quickly was renamed People Before Profit.
