Signs of Hope – A continuing series April 10, 2020

Gewerkschaftler suggested this recently:

I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.

Any contributions this week?

There’s a tranche of decent Protestants in the North, the same demographic who didn’t just up sticks in the South in 1922 because they hated the Taigues. And it’s clearly obvious to them that right-wing English imperial nostalgia is a road to nowhere.

This is the swing vote that keeps popping up in recent polls as swinging to pro-reunification.

We’re saved by FG and a Protestant evangelical singer, according to the IT:

Ireland wields its ‘soft power’ as Bono joins coronavirus fight
U2 singer is just one of number of people the Government has sought crucial help from

Stop the presses! Our lá has tiocfaidh-ed!
According the Irish Times, Gardaí are investigating two armed robberies in West Belfast – intrigued I went to the story, to discover that it was the plain old PSNI who were doing the ‘vestigating.

Here’s the link, but they’ll probably fix it.

I went around the corner for some shopping this morning and noticed a big banner flying below the upstairs window of a neighbour’s home:

TO ALL THE FRONTLINE WORKERS
Go raibh míle maith agaibh.

It’s deadly.

Sign of something or other an’anyways.

One thing you notice about ‘here’ as opposed to ‘over there’ is the relative invisibility of the ‘far’ left. Very little in the way of political fly posting or anything. But over one night recently, the RCG plastered Leeds 6 – and possibly elsewhere: who knows? – with retro looking A4 posters demanding an end to NHS privatisation and a ‘Rent Freeze Now!’.
Cheered me up.
