Ruling By Fooling  by Tommy McKearney

Fifty years after the collapse of the first attempt to reform the governance of Northern Ireland, the six county state remains a hopelessly failed political entity. Not only is it afflicted with the chaotically dysfunctional local Stormont administration, but lurking always in the background is manipulation by Britain’s Deep State.     […]

The GAA – No Longer Fit For Purpose by Paul McGoldrick

Born out of genocide and oppression and after centuries of Irish culture, language, indigenous sports, and pastimes had been deliberately eroded by English, later British colonialism, it was no coincidence that many of the GAA’s founding members had links to political organisations, namely the Land League and Republican movements such

Erinnerungskultur — Germany’s False Memory Syndrome  by Dáithí Ó hAirtrí

On May 17, German MEP for Brandenburg Christian Ehler tweeted: “Earlier this month, the leadership of Trinity College Dublin gave in to pressure from anti-Semitic student group [sic] and committed to punishing the Jewish people for protecting themselves against the terrorists of Hamas operating out of Gaza.” It was part […]

Report from Bohemian FC vs Palestine, 15th May 2024 in Dalymount Park by Neil O’Riordan

Formal recognition by Ireland of the Palestinian state is expected to happen before the end of the month.  To all intents and purposes, it occurred at Dalymount Park in Dublin on Wednesday, May 15.  The first game of a Palestinian national team on European soil was always going to be […]

A Popular Front – Ideology and Organisational Form  by Nicola Lawlor

Earlier this year, I wrote in Socialist Voice on the need for the Party to consider resurrecting the concept and approach of the Popular Front as necessary at this time, but to do so in a new context and not by merely replicating the past. I argued that this is […]

Coalition Government Running Out Of Steam and a System That Can’t Be Fixed!  by Eugene McCartan

The three party coalition government of Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and the Green Party is clearly running out of steam. Their Programme for Government has failed on many levels, from housing to the environment to healthcare, the list goes on.  Their housing strategy has failed as private capital is driven […]

Imperialism Must Be Confronted – Mobilise For Unity  by Jimmy Doran

The Socialist Voice is a useful medium for critical debate on many issues, for advancing the self-determination of the people of Ireland. It is not for promoting or ignoring  British colonialism in Ireland.  An article, “Mobilising Northern Workers”, in  the May edition completely ignored the savagery and injustice of the […]

Urania  by Miles De Wilde

With the current culture wars focusing on mainly trans people, singling out trans women in particular (and forgetting trans men exist), one would almost forget that Irish feminists were once involved in a feminist journal that had subscribers all over the world. It was revolutionary in its writing, trying to […]

Portugal’s Unfinished Carnation Revolution of 1974 by John Pinkerton and Deegall McKillen

Fifty years ago on April 25th, Portugal’s 41-year-old dictatorship, the oldest in Europe, was overthrown in just 24 hours with only four dead – all shot by the fascist secret police.  “The centre of Lisbon was awash with flowers and knots of jubilant groups on every street corner. Soldiers and sailors […]

Book Review: Maya Wind’s Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom by Richard Mullen

Maya Wind’s Towers of Ivory and Steel: How Israeli Universities Deny Palestinian Freedom saw its Dublin launch at Trinity College, mere minutes after the Trinity students celebrated the end of their encampment. The book launch was a chance to contextualise the euphoria of one of the first wins for the […]

No Glory In War  by Clover Carroll

In 1985, Soviet Belarusian anti-war film Come and See, written and directed by Elem Klimov, was finally released. The film follows the story of a young boy from a rural village. He joins the partisans to fight off the nazi army invading the country and through his experiences, we see […]

James Connolly Commemoration at Arbour Hill by Bernardo Guanche Hernandez

The following is a speech given by Cuban Ambassador of Ireland, Bernardo Guanche Henandez, at this year’s James Connolly Commemoration at Arbour Hill in Dublin: “Comrades all,  I am very honored this afternoon to pay tribute to a historical figure of the stature of James Connolly, a prominent Marxist and […]

Irish Fascism: Cui Bono?  by Jimmy Corcoran

The rise of the Irish far-right has finally become a media issue. Following far-right arson attacks on proposed refugee centres and assaults on election workers from parties believed to be critical of capitalism, RTÉ has pushed the issue of migration towards the top of its current affairs agenda, to the […]

Book Review – Techno Feudalism by Yanis Varoufakis by Sajeev Kumar

The M-C-C’-M’ circuit means Money (M) which is exchanged for Commodities (C) – including labor power which also becomes a commodity in a capitalist society – involved in the production process to produce a value-added commodity (C’) which is sold for more Money (M’), and thus the accumulation of capital […]

Review – James Connolly Festival 2024 by Aaron Nolan

In a departure from the usual week-long run of events, this year’s James Connolly Festival ran from Thursday to Sunday, culminating on 12th May: 107 years to the day that Ireland lost its greatest martyr and Marxist theoretician, James Connolly.  It was at the outbreak of war in Europe during […]

1. Et Pluribus - June 14, 2024

A recent article in the Irish News (Connla Young, 27th April 2024) once again emphasises the sheer hypocrisy of the GAA’s top table when a traditional music band were forced to withdraw from playing at the recent Ulster championship game between Derry and Donegal because of the band’s support for Palestine. Ulster Council chief executive Brian McAvoy insisted the band could not play under their name, Saoirse don Phalaistín (Freedom for Palestine). The band was also told they could not display a Palestine flag or make any references to Palestine.

In contrast, after the outbreak of the Russia-US proxy war in Ukraine, the GAA openly supported Ukrainian victims of the conflict with Ukrainian children bringing the Liam McCarthy cup onto the field on All-Ireland final day. Colin Regan, the GAA’s Community Manager, stated: “Whatever we do in terms of that visibility – making sure that they appreciate that the Irish communities are 100% behind them, that the association is doing whatever we can”. Many clubs also held fundraisers for Ukrainian refugees, but when it comes to genocide in Palestine, the GAA (quoting their own words) are apolitical. In doing so, they totally ignore the on-going genocide and humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

Duelling accusations of hypocrisy obviously when we’re talking about the CPI, but fairly shocked to see the GAA engaging in this kind of nonsense.
