Lennon recorded the quite appalling ‘Luck of the Irish’ on the ‘Summer Time in New York City’ LP, which also included the subtle feminist track ‘Woman is the Nigger of the World.’ For those of you troubled by Irish nationalist sectarianism ‘Luck’ includes the lines ‘repatriate to Britain all those who call it home’ but even worse ‘if you had the luck of the Irish you wish you was dead’. Happiness is a warm gun indeed…
However, Paul the sentimental one, was at number one (in Ireland of course) for quite a while in 1972 with ‘Give Ireland Back to the Irish’. Back in the pre-ceasefire days (about 1990) I remember a 2FM request show where you could call in and ask for any obscure song and they’d try and find it, or if not give you a prize. Some guy rings in and asks for ‘Give Ireland Back to the Irish’; I thought he’s going to win something because theres no way they’ll play this. But the stingy bastards come back and play…the B-Side- the instrumental version!
To my knowledge Ringo never recorded a pro-IRA song, unless Yellow Submarine is about the Marita Ann. George had the same name as a major gunrunner. Thats enough Beatles….

Her song ‘Simply the Best’ was appropriated as a Loyalist (specifically UDA, I think) anthem, with ‘subtle’ changes to the lyrics.

The mid-Ulster UVF and subsequently LVF used it too. They produced very dapper polo shirts with their logo and that phrase before Adair and his mates did the same.

My favourite music and the troubles event has to be the account I read of the Lower Shankill festival where the mad dog read out the names of UVF conected families who had to get out to the backtrack hard Loyalist techno. In my view the high point of Adair’s career. Ah C Company now there’s a study for a cultural sociologist

What’s actually dreadful about “Luck of the Irish” is that Yoko sings half the verses. The album also includes “Sunday Bloody Sunday” # When Stormont bans our marches, it’s those mothers’ turn to burn#

The BBC had a radio programme on Lennon once where possibly Andy Kershaw described STINYC as Lennon’s worst. You can excise Yoko’s lyrics from “Luck of the Irish” with some careful taping. “John Sinclair” is quite rousing, “Woman is the Nigger of the World” is not.

If you can block out the lyrics, which I concede is difficult, STINYC has some good music on it, and Lennon’s baseline rock ‘n’ roll skills never completely deserted him no matter how bad the material with which he supplied himself. Phil Spector was already mad as a hatter even then but the man could produce.

He lied to the Guardian Newspaper saying he had no interest in politics till he joined the Labour Party.Most of these politicians are branch stackers and numbers people both Labour and Conservative.One the biggest branch stackers is Malcolm Turnbull in Australia.He even went around nursing homes signing up new members so he could get ellected.
