This Weekend I’ll Mostly Be Listening to… Half Man Half Biscuit August 10, 2013

For some reason I started listening to Half Man Half Biscuit again recently. Primarily their first two albums ‘Back in the DHSS’ and ‘Back Again in the DHSS’. At the time they came out they were brilliant and are still as good now as they were then. There were quite a few ‘parody’ bands around back then doing amusing cover versions but HMHB took it to a whole new level. It was witty and Bizarre and mocked all sorts. Musically it stands the test of time too as it wasn’t
The selection below has some of their classic songs ‘All I want for Christmas is a Dukla Prague Away Kit’, ‘Seal Clubbing’ and ‘Dickie Davies Eyes’. The music is possibly more sophisticated than it originally sounds but its the lyrics where the real joy is.
My Mother has a habit of breaking into song when certain words or phrases from songs are mentioned. So for example you might be having a chat about somebody called Phil and she’d launch into ‘Phil the fluther’s ball’, or mention someone called Mary and she’d launch into ‘Oh Mary this Londons a wonderful sight…’. Well I developed a similar trait except for years it was Half Man Half Biscuit songs, I regularly blurted out lines like ‘The Art Teacher said he understood’, ‘Me and my girl seal clubbing, me and my girl out on the ice’ etc and usually got strange looks.
Keeping it Peel has a great selection of HMHB peel sessions here
It’s always good to be reminded of HMHB! Their last album was pretty good. It has the immortal line, having deconstructed some Johnny Cash fans, ‘shot a man in Tesco just to watch him die’.
Ah, here’s the lyrics… http://www.chrisrand.com/hmhb/90-bisodol-crimond/lenfer-cest-les-autres/
