Same sex marriage is all the fault of the Frankfurt School… Say what? May 18, 2015

Here’s a neat little conspiracy theory exemplified in the comments of a fine piece by Com Tóibín on marriage equality. The poor old Frankfurt School. If most people took it half as seriously as a small tranche on the right of right one might believe it had such remarkable influence abroad. But it doesn’t. Love the way all the significant gaps and voids between the figures named below are ignored or leaped across as if they simply don’t exist. And as to the last – odd how ‘sexual anarchy’ = a wish for marriage equality.
@patrickodowd no social engineering if one remains with the status quo…the social engineering comes entirely when marriage (male female unions usually for the purpose of raising a family) is redefined. I see you still haven’t familiarised yourself with the Frankfurt School….you would better understand the genesis of the SSM movement if you did… 1. Two cultural/political movements underpin demand for Same Sex Marriage (SSM) a. Gay Rights Movement. b. Neo-Marxist Counter Culture Movement (Frankfurt School) a) being linked to b) 2. Lenin/Mȕnzenberg – seduction of West’s intellectuals – Lukacs – Sex ‘Ed’ for children (NB Lukacs was kicked out of Hungary as outraged citizens saw the social engineering he embarked on) 3. Lenin’s concept of ‘political correctness’ used by elite for both movements. 4. Marcuse – Cultural Marxist- Critical Theory – attacks western democratic cultural traditions of family, Church and patriotism. Aim to replace capitalism with neo-Marxism. 5. Gramsci – Neo-Marxist ideologue urges activists to make alliances with ‘victim’ anti-establishment groups & infiltrate institutions. Change and control language. 6. Alfred Kinsey – Self appointed ‘sexologist’ – scientific fraud – Kinsey Institute – homosexuality as ‘life style’ – Forms of homosexuality – Sexual anarchy advocates. Now proven to be fraud… These are the true social engineers…VOTE NO..and can YES voters stop introducing red herrings such as Magdalen laundries ete etc…clutching at straws..
The closing line about people introducing ‘red herrings’ is the best unintentional self-satire I’ve seen in years. I knew these loons had a thing about Gramsci and the Frankfurt School, Melanie Phillips and her Norwegian disciple Breivik are always banging on about cultural Marxism, but I was surprised to see Willi Münzenberg in the mix there, I thought he was too obscure. A quick google for Münzenberg turns up a few articles though, and invariably the authors appear to be rabid anti-Semites and Holocaust deniers. Pretty safe to assume that when this guy was writing the post above, his mind was going JEWS JEWS JEWS JEWS DIRTY FUCKING JEWS STEALING OUR CHRISTIAN BABIES SO THEY CAN FEED ON THEIR BLOOD.

Yes, the “red herrings” line made me laugh out loud in a cafe.

Dear me.
Re the Frankfurt school ideologue with whom I’m most familiar:
There’s more than a whiff of unreconstructed homophobia about some of Adorno’s remarks actually; although he also took a relatively disenchanted view of bourgeois marriage as well; so he’d probably have thought they were welcome to it.

Such nuance would escape entirely those who throw the FS’s name around. Zero Books had a good podcast on all this a while back. In my estimation when ever someone on the right mentions the term it almost invariably links right into the approach Ed mentions above.

I never realised they were even on the radar of the lunatc right. I live a sheltered life. The idea of John ‘troubled’ Waters throwing a copy of ‘Eros and Civilisation’ or the ‘Dialectic of Enlightenment’ across the room in disgust is diverting.

Indeed; it’s even possible to see himself seeing himself in Adorno’s deft portrait of a similarly displaced small town boy in the big city:

At this rate, I reckon we could get in on the Celtic spirituality racket with a Frankfurt School based divination technique.

Sorry. They’d actually read it prior to hurling the book SoS? No chance of that on their part!

And the whole passage it comes from, about intellectuals as competing supplicants.
It’s a bit like the one about the comedians who know each other’s jokes. All you have to do with Minima Moralia is shout “Number 7” and John Waters’ head will explode.

I’m alright, I teach aerodynamics. You’re screwed. As long as they never hear about the lecture where I described Trident as a penis-substitute, I’m untouchable.

Michael Carley – wait till the ‘Committee on Extremism in Higher Education’ get’s going.
You lot are always going on about ‘turbulence’ and ‘chaotic property changes’. Subliminal radicalisation, if you ask me. I shall be informing the the chair of the committee.

I blame ‘The Joy of Sex’ by the left libertarian Alex Comfort- now that beards are ‘in’ again this proves beyond any doubt…
Has the left always been gay friendly? I’ve heard stuff about Guevara and Trotsky having no time for gays- can anybody confirm?/deny?
The above drivel is comparable to Oliver J Flanagan’s remark about sex and rté- only in this case ‘there was no sex in the world until the Frankfurt School’
I’m surprised that the list left out Michel Foucault…here’s hoping that a yes on Friday will lead to kids learning form the above list in a whole range of subjects 🙂

Btw Castro has apologised for the way lgbt people were treated for much of the revolution. It’s better than it was, but more than room for improvement.

But to be a little bit fair to the Frankfurters – they were very much (patriarchal) heirs of orthodox Freudianism’s missionary position heterosexism.
A joyous discussion above, people.
BTW – is it time for a Karen Horney revival?

[…] So there I was, minding my own business, when I discovered that the Frankfurt School was responsible for giving gay men and women in Ireland the right to marry. […]

Frankfurt school though more usually Gramsci are always getting a mention in Alive! magazine. They rarely go explicitly “CULTURAL MARXISM CONSPIRACY” but regularly reference ideas about control of language and marches through institutions, etc.
Another one gaining currency among Iona and that lot was some French conservative last year suggesting that the left has retreated to feminism etc because we have lost so much ground on the economic front. In a Irish context they would aim this charge at the Labour Party staking so much on this referendum and the work of people like Clare Daly.

I don’t know about Leon and Che. With regards British leftists,
I know that both Aldous Huxley and George Orwell disapproved
of homosexuality (although this didn’t stop them having
gay friends). By contrast, Winifred Holtby suggested homosexuality
wasn’t “abnormal” in her 1934 book “Women and A Changing
Civilisation”.

Your observations are correct. Marxist governments penalised homosexuality; the Soviet gulag had many inmates. Orwell equated homosexuality with fascist tendencies, aware that the left-leaning Nazi leader Erich Roehm, a homosexual, was among some key nazis rounded up and summarily executed on Hitler’s orders in the early 30s. Some marxist thinkers, Marx included, regarded marriage as a bourgeois construct more tied up with property transfer and the continuation of dynastic family power than with the concept of romantic love. Some anarchist thinkers have had similar ideas. In China today homosexual acts are outlawed but there has been some ‘cautious’ newspaper coverage of the subject, and gay bars exist discreetly in many cities. Don’t ask don’t tell is the general rule. A few years ago in Shanghai a gay beauty contest was announced but a few days before the event officials in the communist city government ordered its cancellation. The reason:- the organisers had given the event too much publicity.
