Just heard a bit of the new Plough And The Stars on Radio 4’s arts programme. Thought the accent sounded off.
It was Tom Vaughan-Lawlor reprising his Love/Hate shtick.

Andy Reid has retired. On his 34th birthday. Injuries over the last few years made up his mind. Great player, great left foot.
Shay Given retired from international football too but I don’t care.

INM scrape the bottom of the barrel with this article.
Headline: “How Herda sharpened her look during murder trial”
Marta Herda, who was convicted of murder yesterday, demonstrated her wickedness and wanton streak by ‘sharpening her image’ and wearing short skirts. One does not need to be Carl Jung to think the drawing of a connection between a higher hem line and one’s morals is rather worrying.
Her dress choice was seemingly an ‘intricate fashion ploy’ but which did not fool the jury in the end. The vile enchantress had tried to distract them with her revealing outfits because women make clothing decisions entirely with a view to bewitching men.
Did this piece get in because of its sexism or was it that the attitude is endemic that nobody noticed?

Cohen should be lauded for his brilliant, incisive and witty satire.

‘Hand-wringingly PC’ which is why they despise Corbyn because he wouldn’t let them vilify immigrants and refugees (remember the mugs?)
‘Bleeding-heart-do-gooders’ which is why they all supported the Iraq war (plenty of blood there alright)
Is there nobody at the Observer who’s willing to call time on this clapped-out alco and his ravings? They could at least find a competent right-wing opinion columnist to fill the gap.

To be honest the worst of if is that he knows, because he knows his history of left-wing ‘extremists’ that actual violence from that quarter is marked much more by its absence than otherwise – and frankly there’s no comparison with the far-right if that’s the standard being used (or most standards). Yet, he manages to distort that actual history with scare-mongering about a supposed potential threat because an alleged right wing extremist did commit a murder. That’s illogical, self-serving and utterly utterly gratuitous conceptual piggy backing on an event that shouldn’t be treated in such a disrespectful way.

What’s the opposite of a do- gooder? A do badder, who would want to be that? Bit like nanny state- what’s wrong with nannies- they seem like decent human beings to me.

So Corbyn, according to Cohen, is the Trump of the Left? Utterly absurd, and the way he tries to drag the murder of poor Jo Cox into the issue is despicable.

A disgusting and shameless apologist for fascism, writing PR puffs for the British far right. Britain First should be paying the crook a retainer. Post-fact politics how are ya.

And people wonder why the Guardian and the Observer keep losing readers.
Cohen should keep this kind of offensive nonsense for his “Standpoint” magazine columns.

I’ve been thinking- perhaps UK readers unhappy with Cohen’s piece
should consider contacting the Independent Press Standards Organisation and register a complaint about it? Normally I wouldn’t
suggest this (the media is full of crap) but the claim of non-existing
“death threats” against Corbyn opponents, and the disrespectful use of Jo Cox’s murder, might warrant such a complaint.

Good on them. Did you read the tweets? Some people have an almost creepy outward adherence to lines like ‘the company was obeying the law and what’s wrong with that?’ when it clearly wasn’t from the off.

Ninety Nine years ago, Montana trade unionist Frank Little was murdered:

Frank Little was a wobbly. To call him a trade unionist is a misnomer. Wobblies believe in the One Big Union of all labor as opposed crafts and trades. A fine man deserving of remembrance and a great cause worthy of rallying around even today, especially today.

The thing I don’t understand is why there can’t be a weighting or some such or an allowance that would be transparent? People get that Dublin is ferociously expensive but why is such a meal made of it all? Funnily enough the WP went through precisely this back in the 1980s. I think it was Joe Sherlock who was most vociferous in arguing for a break from the AIW.

It’s excuses though, just politicos wanted what they think they’re owed but not having the sheer cheek to say it openly. In practice if you buy into the philosophical arguments for AIW then the concessions you’ll have to make in your own domestic life will probably come reasonably naturally, however if principles (economic ones) aren’t your primary guiding light then it might not be so easy to resist the temptation to lobby for the near trebling of your already higher than average wages.
