Okay, decision made, Sinclair Lewis and ‘It Can’t Happen Here’ ( a bit like book club – eh? I’m here all week, folks.). So how do we proceed? A chapter a week? More, less?

I started reading ICHH today. Rather amusing scene set in a hotel with a rant from the hyper-patriotic Miss Gimmitch (who reads like a prototype Phyllis Schlafly).

Yes that first chapter is pretty good, light but pointed, not without sympathy either for all in a way

I’m up to Chapter 5 today. So far Lewis has used his cast of characters to make satirical points about 1930s politics, though some it may be confusing for readers not familar with the period. How many members of the general reading public would remember bodybuilder and businessman
Bernarr Macfadden or journalist and
peace activist Oswald Garrison Villard ?. They’re both namechecked in ICHH.
