Issue of the day…  May 1, 2024

Interesting to see the way in which immigration has slipped back to 12% in the period since December where it hit 23% in January in the rolling poll of public opinion on current issues in the Irish Times.

Housing is back ahead – having been overtaken by the referendums a month back, and is now at 21%.

Crime, Gardai, apparently not a thing. Referendums, for some unknown reason at 9%. Let it go, let it go. The Fine Gael change of leadership is at 7%. Proper order. But Cost of Living is below this at 6%? Healthcare/HSE at 3%. Climate change at 2%. Taxes at the same level. Economy at the same level. Taxes at the same level. Gaza at the same level.

What does this tell us? That many issues jostle around for traction, that much of this is media and social media led, that some are sticky – as it were, some are not, that point about housing – its persistence – suggests that it remains a very live issue in broad terms. That can’t be good for the government.

I think a confounding factor on this might that housing and immigration are to a large extent the same issue – or at least they’re inextricably linked. And how the coverage plays in an election is likely to be down to how different parties choose to play it.

That does make sense.
