In the wake of the Easter Rising, Lloyd George summoned a
convention of representative Irishmen to try to solve the ‘Irish
question’. To mark the centenary of the Irish Convention, the
Trinity Centre for Contemporary Irish History will host a two-day
Symposium to examine what the Convention hoped to achieve,
and the reasons why it failed. The Symposium will also address
the Convention’s legacy, particularly in terms of how all-party talks have shaped the recent history of this island.
Our symposium will open in Regent House where the
Convention met, and contributors will include:
Bertie Ahern, John Bruton, Ian d’Alton, David Dickson,
Anne Dolan, Patrick Geoghegan, Michael Laffan,
Martin Mansergh, Conor Morrissey, Eunan O’Halpin,
Patrick Maume, Margaret O’Callaghan, Fionnuala Walsh,
Bernadette Whelan, Padraig Yeates.

Facebook historian friend of mine is posting about the Loyalism in Context conference which she is attending. She has a piece up on a paper from John Regan. She says Regan has added some sophistication to Hart’s and Fitzpatrick’s work on the decline of Protestant populations post 1922. She says after Regan’s talk, a member of the audience had a right good go at him, said audience member being from a Border Protestant family that moved north. Sounds like fun.

‘Said audience member’ was a northern loyalist skinhead, who proceeded to loudly heckle Regan all through his Q&A, while a smirking Brian Walker was sitting beside and egged on by the TCD and QUB contingents.

This Northern rent-a-mob warmed up first, of course, by attacking the southern Protestant speakers of the previous session, who had asserted that the southern experience wasn’t bad. In fairness to Ian d’Alton and the lady, they stood their ground against this attempt at intimidation.
This ‘West Brit’ conference in two weeks is going to be an absolute shitstorm, if this is the sort of unwelcome attention even a better, genuinely academic conference is attracting.

Given that your usual commentary here about such things is usually of the smarmy persuasion, I’d say that the onus is on you to be clearer in future. So yes, ‘inverted commas’ please.

Aren’t we actually all agreeing on this? And I too have southern Protestant relatives (indeed I had the happy good luck to be brought to both Service and Mass for many years on concurrent Sundays in my youth. Enjoyed both).
