Political Background of Independents in the 2019 Local Elections #LE19 May 15, 2019
Posted by irishelectionliterature in Uncategorized.trackback
With the Local Elections coming a breakdown to the best of my knowledge of the political backgrounds of all the Independents running.
I’ve also included links to their current leaflets if I had them posted.
If there is any additional information on any candidate that I have missed or if there are any errors please comment.
am I right that “PD” is referring to Progressive Democrats, not to People’s Democracy?

Stephen O’Loughlin in Cabra-glasnevin was a Social Democrat LAR up to a while ago, now his SD website page is 404. Perhaps because Gary Gannon is running in the same ward?

Off topic, but really liked your review of Tolkien. Back on topic, interested in your outline of who you would be voting for. At least you have Perry.

I’m taking from this conversation NFB that you are a voter in Cabra Glasnevin. Would love to hear your take on where the seats might end up and on the campaign in the constituency in general. Any chance?
LikeLike
This is actually my first local living in the area, and the constituency has been re-drawn from 2014 (it’s a real Frankenstein’s monster now, taking in Cabra, Glasnevin, Phibsborough and Ashtown), so it’s hard for me to say. Cieran Perry should top the poll again, then I would say one for Fianna Fail, one for Labour, two for Sinn Fein (they elected three in 2014 and are running two now), one SD and then it’s a crapshoot between Fianna Fail, both Fine Gael and a few hard-lefts for the last seat. Just because of the name, if I had to make a prediction it would be Hannah Lemass for FF.
Fine Gael are pushing hard to get a seat after getting nothing in 2014, lots of posters, canvassing and I got a letter from the Taoiseach’s office the other day (Leo’s constituency too) urging for a FG councillor to make sure the place is “properly represented”. Labour, for some reason, are running three candidates in a place they won just one seat in in 2014 and I can’t see how that will work out. Greens Neasa Hourigan has a good presence in terms of posters, but not sure they have much traction out here. Probably a few too many hard-left candidates (Solidarity, Workers, Inds4Change and a few Independents) to make a big impact.
But that’s just my own opinions, I couldn’t in any way claim to be an authority on the area’s politics. The last two referendums and the Presidential election have been my only votes here.

It will be interesting to see how Gary Gannon does. He has had no campaign locally but has a certain name recognition. I think FG will take a seat even though the two candidates are not active. It’s Paschals constituency and that would be to their benefit.
LikeLike
Yep, Gannon’s result will be interesting. If it’s true that he has had no local campaign then he’s at risk of losing his Council seat.
NFB, SF got three last time but that was in Cabra Finglas (am I right?) and not Cabra Glasnevin. Different constitutency. I’m still saying they’ll only get one seat. And I’ll predict a seat for the Green’s Hourigan cos hey la dee la, the Greens are back.
So my very latest prediction is 2 Lab, 1 FF, 1 FG, 1 SF, 1 Ind Perry and 1 Green.

Just got a leaflet in the door from Gannon. He’s calling himself the candidate for Glasnevin. “I moved here in 2017 when I bought my house”….”I’ve noticed Glasnevin doesn’t get a fair allocation of Council funding…” . Then he produces a pie chart of Council funding by area – big slice for Finglas, another for Cabra and so on. And a small slice for Glasnevin. Fook’s sake.
His granda was a docker and his ma was a street trader and now he has come out from the city to fight for a fair slice for the poor downtrodden people of Glasnevin. Wonder how it will go down? Nul points from me, for starters.

Seriously Alan, this says more about your political perspective than it does about mine. Do you check under the bed for Nazis every night before you go to sleep? Maybe they are hiding behind that pile of posters, you better go take a look 🙂

Cathal. I know you’re a long time Community Activist etc and have the interests of your Community at heart.. That siad I’d never seen Sharia Law mentioned before in an Irish Election Leaflet, the Freedom of Speech stuff too. Whats the best description because that stuff is the language of the far right?
LikeLike
Alan, if you truly believe that the far-right are into freedom of speech then you are very naive; just like their authoritarian cousins on the far-left they do not tolerate opinions that differ from their own. Do you believe that Sharia Law should be accommodated and facilitated in Ireland? Anyone who raises issues that the neo liberals and their far-left clowns want swept under the carpet are labelled as “alt-right,” “far-right,” “fascist” or “Nazis;” that is the language of the far-left Marxists and they love to chant there little heads off with a variety of slogans that extol their ‘everyone that disagrees with me is literally Hitler’ mindset. Are you a looney leftie Antifa type?
LikeLiked by 1 person
Actually Cathal, stuff about Sharia, freedom of speech and so on is the coinage of the alt-right these days. I’ll entirely accept IEL’s analysis about your sincerity as a community activist, but it is entirely reasonable to draw attention – exercise freedom of speech if you will – to the presumably unintentional similarities. And by the by, ‘far-left Marxists’ also have freedom of speech too, even if you or whoever don’t much like what they’re saying (not least because legally they cannot restrict speech, as is evidenced by a multitude of online and off sites etc).
LikeLike
In any case, wouldn’t we have to have a referendum to legitimise sharia over our own law?
LikeLike
Absolutely – I’d be amazed if it were otherwise and as a leftist (loony or otherwise) I’d be v dubious as a citizen if a republic seeing parallel legal systems instated – have t we had enough of that with annulments and so on and other aspects wrt the catholic Church

Unfortunately she is for real. I think PBP may have been a flag of convenience for some in 2014.
