This Weekend I’ll Mostly be Listening to Songs and Music about… Flying December 7, 2019

And why not? Starting with with my favourite Clash song ever – Spanish Bombs, which is not just about Spain and its history also has the line ‘I’m flyin’ in on a DC 10 tonight’. Excellent. More gloomily there’s Saxon’s heartfelt plea for air safety and in particular minimum safe distance: 747 – Strangers in the Night. Lana Del Rey’s song is a fascinating addition to the canon. From there it’s a mix and I’ve a suspicion some of these songs aren’t about flying at all! 🙂 All additions welcome. And there’s one song by a band I really love which I’ve left off. It’s all about flying and be interesting to see if anyone namechekcs it.

Come Fly with Me – Frank Sinatra

Peter, Paul & Mary’s Leaving on a Jet Plane by Me First And Gimme Gimme Gimme’s.

Spanish Bombs – The Clash

I would throw in Paper Planes by MIA. Great track by an exciting artist.

Speaking of MIA, the wife is currently in Sri Lanka for work. One of her colleagues is a Tamil whose family fled to London during the conflict. He was showing them around a lot of the affected areas in the north yesterday.

Obvious one, but 8 Miles High by the Byrds (and the Lear Jet Song)

Speaks perhaps to my morbid nature, but my first thought was…

And for the season that’s in it, an ostensible Christmas song from an Oirish-American trio. Its loveliness and sadness and mystery only grow once you know the background to it.

Terre Roche: ‘That’s my song of appreciation to my very close friend Joanna Walton, who was killed in a terrorist attack on an airplane over Lockerbie Scotland in 1988. I wrote the song in the middle of the night and have always felt that it came from someplace beyond.’

Those are morbid, but they’re excellent.

I been fifteen years now since I’ve written songs
Over a hundred and still going strong
About drinking and hockey and flying above
Again and again about unhappy love

It’s all in this one from Wainwright 111.

And more flying.

Francie and the lads and lasses from Sth Derry were always orthodox. The official Party line was for a 32 county socialist republic. If I remember correctly, the Ard Fheis before the split had a bit of a kefuffle over a sort of a new Party constitution put forward by Eamon Gilmore and a task force. Some elements of this ‘transformational’ as opposed to ‘revolutionary’ document were opposed, many successfully, by a combination of northerners and Marxist-Leninists and the like.
Francie Donnelly got up to say that the Party should stick to being for “a 32 County socialist republic, a unitary state on the island of Ireland”. I spoke after him and said that we shouldn’t get fixated on the form of the socialist wotsit on the island. I said something about us wanting people united, not a unitary state; that we wanted Protestants and Catholics going out and buying condoms together and making love together. I think buying condoms was still a legal issue down south at the time.
I never actually spoke to Francie or Marian but they were and are the best of people.
I remember hearing that Francie had had his jaw broken at a football match by a Provo. Hope that wasn’t you Roddy!

One “flying” song or maybe “non flying” song which the public performance of could have got you into bother up here was “mull of Kintyre”.After half of MI5,British army intelligence and RUC special branch went down in a helicopter crash over the Mull, several youths appeared in court for singing it at crown forces personell.
