Another important anniversary, that of the French Revolution and another flawed revolution.

‘and another flawed revolution’? What’s that a reference to? The French Revolution? Flawed? The French Revolution was a thing of beauty.
Down with liberal revisionism on the CLR.

I heard it was fairly brutal, Joe.

Brutally beautiful. Beautifully brutal. Too soon to say whether it was swift or not.

And for the day that’s in it. A new proposal for the mast: Ni dieu, ni maitre. Ni patrie, ni patron.

Interesting, I was just re-playing Bioshock recently, where one of the antagonists has a slight variation of this as a motto of sorts: https://townserd.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/bioshock-no-gods-or-kings1.jpg

Also the name of one of the endings in the excellent Fallout: New Vegas, the one where the player rejects all factions and takes over the titular city themselves! I wonder if younger visitors to the site will associate the saying with those things more than Blanqui (which I’m only dimly aware of)

A Bastille Day ‘Let Them Eat Cake’ moment.

“The White House has started a new campaign urging Americans who have bad jobs or no jobs to “Find Something New.” says Ivanka Trump

“Can’t pay your mortgage? Don’t fear. The administration wants you to follow the example of a fellow American who “ found a medical course online” and became a phlebotomist. “You will find something,” she says.

“The campaign comes with the country in the midst of a public health crisis that has upended entire industries and kicked off a recession that has sent the nation’s unemployment rate shooting above 11%. The nation has 5.4 million job openings, according to the Labor Department, which is not nearly enough for the nearly 18 million Americans who are officially unemployed and the 33 million who are receiving unemployment benefits.”

“Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, food insecurity has increased in the United States. This is particularly true for households with young children….
17.4 percent of mothers with children ages 12 and under reported that since the pandemic started, “the children in my household were not eating enough because we just couldn’t afford enough food.” Of those mothers, 3.4 percent reported that it was often the case that their children were not eating enough due to a lack of resources since the coronavirus pandemic began.”

“For example, let’s say you cannot afford meat and vegetables. You could simply #FindSomethingNew to eat, like cake,”

I think “Find Something New” translates as “On yer bike” in English English.

It sounds like a dogwhistle for the base. All these shiftless unemployed people have to do is find a new job, etc.

For the younger readers who mightn’t get the ‘on yer bike’ reference. From Wiki’s piece on Norman Tebbit:

“In the aftermath of the 1981 riots in Handsworth and Brixton, Tebbit responded to a suggestion by the Young Conservative National chairman, Iain Picton that rioting was the natural reaction to unemployment:

I grew up in the ’30s with an unemployed father. He didn’t riot. He got on his bike and looked for work, and he kept looking till he found it.

As a result, Tebbit is often misquoted as having directly told the unemployed to “get on your bike”, and he was popularly referred to as “Onyerbike” for some considerable time afterwards.”
