Sorry to hear of the death of Paddy Murray, journalist, former editor of the Sunday Tribune (2003-2005) and columnist in the IT in more recent years. I never met the man, but enjoyed his columns in the IT particularly when they gave an insight into some extremely serious health conditions, including Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma and COPD (it was striking how when he reflected on the danger to him from Covid-19 in the comments section below the line there would be dogs abuse. Shameful stuff). And it was very moving to see the affection he had for his family. There’s an overview of his life here.

Sunday Miscellany rebroadcast a piece he did about his early days as a cub reporter at the Evening Herald being debt on spec to see if John Wayne really was having breakfast in the Gresham.

Talking to someone who had met him in real life a few times and found him very nice.

Paddy Murray had a terrible illness and bravely fought it. He provided a great public service in highlighting serious health conditions and his family must be devastated. However, in other aspects of his career he dished out slurs on those who did not fit in with the Indo view of the world and like many of his ilk. He could give it but he couldn’t take it.

When his bishop brother came under the type of scrutiny that Paddy subjected others to, Paddy went berserk and turned on his journalistic “colleagues”. Ironic or what?

I’m afraid that is my view of Murray too. It was an aggressive, guard dog defence of his brother (a man I had the displeasure of meeting a few times) and the impression I had from the bishop himself and Paddy’s writing was that they had an old school, CnaG born-to-rule attitude in terms of how they viewed the rest of us.

But I appreciate we’re all made up of many facets and experiences, so thanks for that additional info on him, wbs, and I did enjoy reading some of his columns in the Sunday World when I was younger.
