Fine statement here by the President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins, on the sad passing of Sam Nolan, a staunch member of the left and the trade union movement.

The following has been posted on the Facebook page of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions:

“We have been informed by Facebook that the statement from President Michael D. Higgins about the life of Sam Nolan, which we posted here, has been ‘moved down the feed’ (partly hidden) for graphic violent content! If this does not testify to the power now wielded by tech corporations, and how they use it, nothing more will move us to come to grips with them. We are not contending that Facebook is censoring a Presidential eulogy for a left wing labour leader. We are contending that Facebook’s system will not stop even at interfering with (censoring effectively) a perfectly positive statement by the elected head of state of a supposedly democratic country. This is the alarm going off.

But, hey, what a finale for Sam Nolan! Even as he passed away at 93 he sends a bolt through the system!!!”

From Helena Sheehan’s FB feed, the celebration of life ceremony (a nice alternative to the word “funeral” I think) is at Glasnevin crematorium on Saturday at 1:30pm.
