That talk of a Labour/Social Democrats merger seems to have died down April 18, 2024

Mentioned Shane Coleman’s article in the Business Post yesterday which took a predictably orthodox view of the Social Democrats as a bolt-on to a future FF or FG government.

Still, one notable aspect – no talk of ‘merger’ with the Labour Party, a party which he foresees losing a number of seats.

Good news, while I am a minority trying to get my party to go back to Connolly, merger was a non runner. I personally find Soc Dem has a problem with believers like me. The anarchists and Trotskyists have been friendly to me. That is my personal experience.

I believe your sincerity, but have found it quite difficult to take the ILP at their word as having anything to do with Connolly (even being quite obviously horrified by the man). And no, the various interpretative dances and whatever that were gone in for at gravesides in 2016 didn’t help

Connolly found the party having many socialist parties instead of a multi faction one socialist party hampers the advance of democratic socialism. Yes, the party needs to and hasn’t dealt with its past. Yes, PBP wonders why I am a Labour member.

Since every attempt attempt to steer the Labour Party back to Connolly’s principles have failed miserably, there is no reason to believe that such a development has the slightest chance of succeeding. Indeed, given that there is no organised left tendency of any sort in the Labour Party today, in contrast to the 1980s let’s say, there is no practical way in which that could happen

“Labour” ! The last time they were in government they stooped to a level beyond redemption, behaving as the thug shock troops of their political FF masters . They decayed into a pond life political level ,even something beyond the way the current Green party evolved into a right wing FG on bike’s.

“Labour ” should do the decent thing, dissolve the party and their current should congeal into the fetid corpse of FFG that they aspire to emulate. Hopefully someday a new party based on the socialism of James Connolly will emerge from the stinking rot and redeem the name “Labour” that today is considered so obnoxious as to make any socialist puke!
