Totted up the time Micheál Martin was in office as Taoiseach and he was there for six months in 2020, twelve months in 2021 and twelve months in 2022. Exactly two and a half years. Varadkar was in office for twelve months in 2023 and just three months in 2024. Harris could potentially be in office all of 10 months given the election must be held by March 22nd 2025.

Whatever else Martin got a pretty good deal when the government negotiations were held.

Whenever a minister steps down before the end of a full term, a pal of mine does a quick calculation to see if they were in office long enough to acquire a ministerial pension and/or lump sum. He does a similar calculation when a TD is appointed minister near the end of a Dáil term.

(He doesn’t like Róisín Shortall, but said she deserves respect for turning down the lump sum she was entitled to when she resigned as junior minister after a short period in office.)
