15 thousands of communist and peace activists marched in Tel Aviv yesterday evening
15 thousands of communist and peace activists marched in Tel Aviv yesterday evening (Saturday, June 5) to mark 43 years of Palestinian and Arab territories occupation while taking the opportunity to slam recent IDF murder raids on Gaza-bound ships.
Dozens of fascist counter-protesters periodically attempted to disrupt the demonstration, and at one point a smoke grenade was hurled at the protestors outside the Tel Aviv Museum in face of the Defense Ministry. No injuries were reported in the incident. Later, right-wing protesters tried to attack veteran peace activist Uri Avneri, snatching signs he was carrying.
The demonstration, which was held under the slogan “The government is drowning us all,” was originally planned by the Communist Party of Israel (CPI) and Hadash (the Democratic Front for Peace and Equality) solely to protest the occupation, but following last Monday’s Israeli deadly raid on a Turkish vessel trying to run the Gaza blockade, the rally also addressed the criminal government’s policies in regard to the Gaza Strip and the military operation that left nine foreigners dead.
“The government is drowning us all” read a large sign in the rally. Dov Khenin, a legislator for Hadash and leading communist militant, charged that “Barak has refused to move on the path of peace and leads [us to] a dangerous deterioration. The same people who sent the soldiers to take over the flotilla in the middle of the night are liable to send Israel to a new and terrible war”. Hadash chairman Mohamed Barakeh declared, “We will not let the crazy right wing push aside the left and the Arab sector into political isolation.”
A spokesman for the organizers of the rally told journalists it “was an even bigger success than he expected” and that he believes the past week’s events had led to an increase in the number of participants. That it showed that “people are opposed to this government that is driving us toward international isolation and a new war.”
The communist and pacifist protestors, who were walking from Rabin Square to the Tel Aviv Museum, were holding up signs reading “The government is sinking all of us – we must aspire for peace”. Other marchers held up signs reading “Israel, Palestine, two states for two people”. The rally has been organized by a communist and peace coalition that includes Hadash, CPI and Meretz parties, the Young Communist Guard (Banki-Shabiba), Peace Now, Gush Shalom, Yesh Gvul, Physicians for Human Rights, and other organizations. The march was being lead by CPI chairman Muhammad Nafah, Knesset Members Muhammad Barakeh, Dov Khenin, Afo Agbarie and Hanna Sweid (from Hadash) and Knesset Members Haim Oron and Nitzan Horowitz (from Meretz).

Sherman’s comments are nothing compared to the following, featured as an editorial column in the very mainstream and highly influential Jewish Week newspaper (which is the most widely read Jewish paper in North America), calling for all future flotillas to be bombed – along with Iran….

The beauty of the almost unanimous international condemnation of Israel for attempting to stop the terrorist flotilla like gentlemen — using paint guns? — instead of using serious military force, should send a message to Jews: You can’t win by being polite to terrorists who have a schoolyard bully mentality. Weakness brings out even more outrageous behavior in bullies.
Next flotilla that violently resists a search — just sink it. Torpedo it. See how many more flotillas follow. The condemnation won’t be any different. Better that than even one more Jew being injured while boarding these floating Jenins.
Few events in recent decades have illuminated the complete hypocrisy of the world. There is nothing that Israel can do or could have done that would stop the next diplomatic ambush. So start acting tough. Call off all peace talks and “proximilty” talks, just like the Palestinians do or threaten to do for “provocations” far less grievous than the Arab-orchestrated gang-up of the past week. If the Palestinians demand a freeze on settlements and construction in Jerusalem before any talks, Israel should demand an end to incitement and nonsense like these fake humanitarian stunts. Throw Obama’s go-between, George Mitchell, out of the country. Start building again in the settlements and Jerusalem. Obama treats enemies better than friends, so don’t be afraid of him, especially with midterm elections coming. And sink the next flotilla — and the one after that.
If the peace process is so important to the United States, Obama will have to start figuring out a way to make Israel feel less isolated and demonized.
By Israel fighting as if their lives actually depended on it — which it does — Israel will, in fact, be taken more seriously by the international scholyard bullies. Bring back the “fear factor.” It is the reason why in 1980 Iran released the hostages when Reagan became president, and not during Carter’s presidency, because Carter was rightly seen by the Iranians as a wimp and Reagan was feared as a trigger-happy cowboy.
We are no longer in the general Euopean anti-Semitism mode but deeper into the new run-up (in the Arab mind) to the Final Solution — the extermination of Israel. In old Germany, a Jew sitting on an Aryan park bench was as much of a criminal as a Jew who robs a bank. So we might as well rob the bank. We might as well take out Iran as take out the flotilla.
The Other Side is fearless now. If someone is going to fear anyone, make the bad guys fear Israel. Right now, too many Jews fear the world. Turn the tables. Make the bad guys think that Israel is craziest S.O.B. in the room. Make everyone wonder what the Jews will do. The world will be furious? Imagine that. Imagine winning.
All that Jews have done lately far is imagine losing. That has to end.
This is a war. Either win it or surrender now, before any one else gets hurt.

Depressing, and nihilistic, approach to things, isn’t it?
It’s actually not war, or at least not war as most of us recognise it and such eschatological language is self-serving.
Note how the events Israel itself generates aren’t responsible in any way for demonisation. That too is self-serving.
He talks about winning, but it seems to me that sort of victory wouldn’t be worth its name.

Right – piss off the US, and do your best to start embargoes (at best) and a war (at worst) against your own country – what could possibly go wrong with such a cunning plan?

What an interesting characterisation of the ending of the Iran hostages crisis. Most other people, on the other hand, believe that the Republicans were probably colluding with the Iranians to beat Carter – just as Nixon had collaborated with the North Vietnamese a decade earlier. Certainly when the Reaganauts were later discovered to have been f**king supplying arms to the Iranians… still something that boggles the mind.

Fanatical Zionist discourse is quite the norm in the outer reaches of US commentary (Christian as well as Jewish). But an article in the ‘most widely read’ Jewish newspaper in North America (if actually that’s the case, since there’s quite a few) doesn’t neccesarily reflect US Jewish opinion. Given that the most extreme Zionist groups demanded that Jews vote for McCain in 2008 because Obama was ‘anti-Israel’ and 80% of Jewish voters rejected this advice, and the growth of groups like J-Street should give pause for thought. Mind you, Shane’s a Pat Buchanan fan, so maybe he wants to believe the worst.

The editorial you link to in Jewish week is interesting – from the Israeli side it makes sense to target ‘liberal progressives’ who are disenchanted with Israel because they see it as ‘oppressing Palestinians’. However, he doesn’t suggest the obvious way to cure this perceptual deficit – to stop oppressing Palestineans…
To imagine its all a presentational problem is part of the problem..
