I don’t listen to Joe Duffy, but Panti blogged about yesterday’s programme where the Rubberbandits’ Christmas video was the topic of discussion. Interesting to hear Willie O’Dea making sense and one of the indignant caller having their lack of understanding of art exposed, and by somebody with a broad working class Limerick accent to boot.
24 minutes into this Joe Duffy show, some of the up-on-their-high-horse set get ripped apart by somebody with a broad Limerick accent.
Rubberbandit: “Somebody needs to give that man a dictionary and he needs to look up the word ‘irony'”
and later …
Indignant caller: “I don’t watch MTV like Martin Scorcese”.
Rubberbandit: “Then, man, you’ve no business looking at art […] We don’t create music for people like you who are going to interpret something literally. […] It’s about metaphor, it’s about art, it’s about different viewpoints creating the meaning. Do you know what I mean?”
Indignant caller: “Absolutely not. Why would I as an individual who would watch that video once and listen to that track once come away with all that? That’s rubbish. […] What’s coming out of that video is the usage and promotion of drugs. It’s a joke.”
Rubberbandit: “It is a joke, yeah. You’re hitting the nail on the head there, kid.”

Fookin great video. These boys have redeemed Limerick’s reputation.
CLR had a video on a few years back of some Limerick rappers giving us a great primer on Irish history. Can anyone find that and put up a link again?

I have to say, having watched the video, having heard blind-boy, having heard Willie O’Dea, having heard Joe laughing & having heard Dermot Whelan’s comments – All I can say is Anthony, thank you for your viewpoint. It stirred up a great debate. By the way, I think Anthony is a plant to stir up discussion about this. Anthony is a component of this subversive plot to overthrow the Irish Establishment view of what (a) a politician represents & (b) what an Irish rock band is. This radio interview is a joke.

Rubber Bandits are fantastic while Willie O’Dea is a failed politician looking for any publicity that he can get.
Lets hope that the Rubber Bandits make it to #1 while the opportunist Deputy O’Dea disappears into political oblivion.

An interesting and very funny piece from earlier this year, (where they are asked to name their Limerick highlights) has them speaking fondly about the Limerick Soviet. The same article has a rather surreal piece on communion which of course got the letter writers out in force. I put up both the original article and one of the complaints here
