SIPTU FAIR HOTELS initiative… June 14, 2011

A useful one, at that. Fair Hotels are ones which recognise unions. The campaign has been going for three years now, and there are 46 hotels classified as FAIR across the island.
Bookings through FairHotels.ie in some cases bring discounts.
Well worth supporting.

It would be good to see more proactive efforts like this on the part of unions on behalf of private sector workers.
The Cedar Lounge Revolution 
It is a great idea. To further positive developments like this, apart from using it for breaks etc, it should be taken as a given that any union or leftwing political organisation or indeed many NGOs should use this list first, when choosing places for conferences or meetings. If you are a member of one of the above- encourage same. A bit like using fairtrade coffee in the staff canteen, it is unlikely to meet much resistance.
I’m open to correction here, but I seem to remember that the number of hotels qualifying as for this ethical choice was lower so that means that in the last two years, more hotels have begun to recognise unions. A remarkable achievement in the current climate and as you say WBS a proactive effort that we need to see more of.

Agreed, a great idea. And the left should be more careful about the hotels they use.
Hotel organisation in Dublin is a shadow of its former itself. Note no Shelbourne, for example. I heard last night the Davenport is now completely non-union. Confirmation anyone?
Only two unionised hotels in the whole of the North. Think about that.
Nevertheless, ‘fair doos’ to those keeping the union going in the hotels and to this campaign.

The girls that went out on strike at the Davenport are still SIPTU and if you read the last issue of that union’s paper it would seem more have since joined from that hotel.

Thanks for that Andrew. I was told last night that by someone who asked for the union rep in the Davenport that the curt response at the desk was ‘there is no trade union here’. Things might have changed since the last ‘Liberty’ but I hope not. Very courageous women.

In theory great. In practice a joke. Majority of ‘trade unions’ refuse to use hotels that recognise the right of staff to join a union. Just google the agm of your union and you will see. Initiative has been run for years without success. If unions won’t support it what chance for others?

I’ve no problem with the initiative, but it has to be said that the unions made very little effort to organise hotels during the boom.

@5 This initiative is all of one year old – every ICTU affiliated union, which I think is all of them, have committed to only hosting events at Fair Hotels from now unless contracted into an arrangement – these latter unions have committed to ending these agreements by end of this year.
