Bennis was a name I became aware of in the context of the 2002 GE in Limerick East when I was, I suppose, first fully aware of what was happening, and curious about the various candidates. I didn’t like her of course, and I remember my not exactly super-liberal parents sharing that sentiment, I think because of her position on divorce as opposed to anything else. I think the relatively large size of that first poll she got (I wouldn’t underestimate her significant GAA links in getting that result) turned her into this icon of those micro-parties they just couldn’t let go of, even if she really was a one-trick pony.

I was very surprised to see her back on the ballot in 2016, I think aged 76? Just looked up one of her leaflets from that contest on your site Alan, struck by the phrase “We can win the war on suicide”, but only with cooperation between church and state of course. Everything has to be some manner of militant-sounding crusade with these people.

Also, right-wing leaflet/interview drinking game:
“Trouble getting our message across”
“silent majority”
“I think I will be elected”
“(Vague reference to some kind of nefarious scheme) from Europe”
“Thousands of people are unrepresented”
“I think we will surprise people”
“moral fabric”
“cult of liberalism”
“common sense”
“a voice for (insert vague demographic here)”
