Culture Thread 28/4/2024 April 28, 2024

Our third of the year.

gregtimo proposed in comments recently the idea of a Culture Thread.

It’s a great idea. Currently culture is a bit strange, but people read, listen to music, watch television and film and so on – spread the net wide, sports, activities, interests, all relevant – and any pointers are always welcome. And it’s not just those areas but many more. Suggestions as to new or old things, events that might have been missed, literally anything.

Sunday Miscellany this morning had a strand of both spoken and musical items running through it on workers – for May Day, I assume.

Appropriate.

Been watching Colin Farrell in Neo-noir yoke Sugar on Apple TV+. Quite enjoying it. And Dick Turpin on the same streaming service. Got rid of Netflix this last month and it’s been great, pushing the watchers in the place out of the comfort zone as well as saving a bit of money.

This oral history of the miners’ strike is very good.

Anyone watching Andrew Scott in Ripley? I recommend the movie Past Lives too. (Neither for non-Netflix WbyS).

Agree, I saw Past Lives in the cinema when it came out and really liked it too.

Ripley is great. So much better than the Matt Damon film version. I particularly like the police inspector character. Andrew Scott is fantastic in it, best thing I’ve seen him in, and I’m struggling to think of anything that he wasn’t great in.

I’ve really been enjoying Harmonica on the TG4 player. A Scandi-drama about a pop group who had big hits 20 years ago, trying to go back on the road – but it’s really a drama about middle-aged life.

Speaking of Andrew Scott, quite enjoyed the audio-drama of 1984 recently (rather ironically an Audible production). Scott plays O’Brien, and is brilliant in the final episode. Listening, I’m surprised there hasn’t been a big budget TV adaptation in the last few years.

For the day that’s in it, a 30-minute film on the history of May Day, We Mean to Make Things Over: A History of May Day:
