“The more you tax the rich, the less it brings in.”
Missing the point that taxes on wealth are driven by ideology, unlike taxes on the working class which are simply practical revenue raising measures and nothing whatsoever to do with politics, and indisputably so.
Vive la France.
Interesting to note that out of 12 paragraphs in that story, the Guardian devotes 4 to a ‘tax lawyer’ and his predictable howls of outrage and blather about the ludicrous ‘Laffer curve’. Nobody else gets more than 1 paragraph. Good old liberal Guardian, policing the orthodoxy on its left flank.
I see one of our own social democrats (known to comment here from time to time) is questioning the Irish government position on the Financial Transaction Tax:

“Ireland is among a number of countries blocking the EU-wide tax which would be worth an estimated €57bn a year to the countries.”
Remember during the Austerity Referendum when its supporters, confronted with evidence that Hollande might not be an unquestioning supporter of fiscal orthodoxy were wont to comment, almost as though perish the thought they’d agreed this line between them, that this was ‘rhetoric’ and that ‘the man is in the middle of an election campaign.’
As members of the Irish political establishment they were actually unable to process the notion that someone might say what he meant during an election campaign. Instead they presumed that, like themselves, he would break every promise he’d made once he got into office. This is the responsible and realistic way to carry on.
Oh well, when we go to the supermarket we don’t put anything French in our basket except for a stripy jumper and a string of onions to hang around our necks anyway.
Nice analysis by Michael Taft of the revenue which could be raised by aligning the tax take on high earners with the EU-15 average:

The rich have countries competing with each other in tax reductions.Let us start by eliminating the tax havens.
If this keeps on there will only be taxes on the lower paid. Nevermind a progressive tax system but a regressive tax system. Aside from Bono’s hypocrisy, we should look at how easy it was done.I really think that it can only be beaten on a pan EU basis.
The Tobin tax is a good idea and in this countries longterm interest.
