The new politics…  June 2, 2016

Well that was fairly pointless… the election of the Ceann Comhairle which saw… no-one win! This new politics is exciting, albeit somewhat unproductive. So much for the Labour Party throwing its weight behind Pat the Cope Gallagher of FF. So much for the remarkable encomiums given on behalf of Mattie McGrath, or Bernard Durkan. One feels for Seán Crowe but he can at least console himself he’s not as unpopular as some in there.

Sinn Féin nominee Sean Crowe was defeated by 106 votes to 33.

Independent Mattie McGrath received 20 votes to 117 against.

Fianna Fáil candidate Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher was defeated by 83 to 52, while Fine Gael TD Bernard Durkan lost by 83 votes to 52.

What happens next? Well, nothing until next Wednesday at the earliest given that they’re away out of the place until then.

I don’t have a breakdown of the vote unfortunately but 10 in addition to the SF cohort. Not too shabby at all.

The Dail is now a mutual non-admiration society. It is probably better to be appointed a deputy chief usher than to be elected deputy Ceann Comhairle, though I suppose the salary and perks are riper with the elected job.

don’t know why the changed the rules for the CC and not the LCC but a lost vote isn’t the end of the world, don’t know why they have to do walk through votes, thats what takes up time, one wonders if there be more horse trading on committee positions to get people to vote for Gallagher http://oireachtasdebates.oireachtas.ie/debates%20authoring/debateswebpack.nsf/takes/dail2016060200010?opendocument
