From the IT this evening, Brendan Howlin at the LP conference, the first, as the IT helpfully notes, since their precipitous drop in seat numbers at the last election.

“We know what we stand for, we know the principles on which we build our policies. We now need to shape our communication with the rest of our society, to reach out to people who have fallen out with us.”

Hmmmm….

How difficult would it have been for the labour party to say after the election: we made compromises while in government that were not what we wanted to do but what we felt we had to do. Then tried to tack to the left and take a more social democrat like stance. It wouldn’t have worked on us but it seems to me it would have been better for them then appearing to still be married to all of FG’s policies despite not being in government.

Howlin: “We have done nothing wrong. We are doing nothing wrong. We have betrayed nobody. The whole problem is poor communication. We will dumb down our language – this may help the morons see the error of their ways.”

I just listened to Jack O’Connor on morning Ireland. It’s like he doesn’t even know what party he is in. He talks about labour being democratic socialists and being the only party that can be trusted to implement an anti-austerity message. I understand members of parties aren’t going to talk dispassionately about their own party but they should say things that are at least minimally credible. If the siptu leadership had any scruples they would disassociate

So… it was some other ‘Labour Party’ who implemented austerity? Is that really the excuse they’re going with?

Bertie was a ‘democratic socialist’ and so were many until the banking shit hit the fan blades in September 2008.

Labour’s tack post election was pure Brecht.

After the uprising of the 17th of June
The Secretary of the Writers’ Union
Had leaflets distributed in the Stalinallee
Stating that the people
Had forfeited the confidence of the government
And could win it back only
By redoubled efforts. Would it not be easier
In that case for the government
To dissolve the people
And elect another?

Anybody in Labour asking the simple question; why? Why did they do so badly at the election? Why do so many people seem to despise them?

Incredible the chase after the amnesiac voter – do they really think there are enough votes among people who don’t remember them in government to make a difference?

Mind you they have reason to be annoyed. If people can forgive FF (and many have) then why not Labour.

Labour issues statement / manifesto…

If a tree falls in the wood and there’s no-one there to listen, does it make any sound?
