How difficult would it have been for the labour party to say after the election: we made compromises while in government that were not what we wanted to do but what we felt we had to do. Then tried to tack to the left and take a more social democrat like stance. It wouldn’t have worked on us but it seems to me it would have been better for them then appearing to still be married to all of FG’s policies despite not being in government.

I just listened to Jack O’Connor on morning Ireland. It’s like he doesn’t even know what party he is in. He talks about labour being democratic socialists and being the only party that can be trusted to implement an anti-austerity message. I understand members of parties aren’t going to talk dispassionately about their own party but they should say things that are at least minimally credible. If the siptu leadership had any scruples they would disassociate
