A stunning strike at British rule in the capital, which forced the British to the negotiating table. The subsequent anti-de Valera propaganda around it by CnaG/FG should be seen for the nonsense it is.

There is new evidence that further attacks on British administrative buildings were planned to occur in several cities in England but the prospect of negotiations led to their cancellation. In Liverpool, there were plans to sabotage the water system first so as to prevent aid to the burning buildings. I hope some of these plans are discussed at this great event.

The alternative target being considered (from BMH statements and MSPC claims) was Dublin Castle itself. This was always intended as a ‘spectacular’, like the Easter Rising, to force Irish independence onto front pages around the world, and it succeeded.

Wikipedia describes the burning of the Customs House thus:
“The operation, involving over 100 IRA volunteers, was a propaganda coup for the republicans but a military disaster for the IRA in the Irish capital. A force of British Auxiliaries quickly arrived and a gun battle erupted. Five IRA volunteers were killed, along with three civilians, and about 80 volunteers were captured.”
This, I understand, would be up to recently the conventional historical wisdom.
Yet the organisers of this conference and others are now claiming that the attack was a success.
So… is this another one of those feckin revisionist beanfeasts?

Joe, I assume that you know full well from the speakers (all published historians) and the topics that it isn’t, and that this is another one of those ‘tongue in cheek’ moments. As to the rest of it, have a look here for a very similar operation:

26 May 2018: ‘Burning of the Custom House’ conference, Custom House, Dublin 1
On Saturday 26 May 2017 the Custom House, Dublin 1, will host a one-day conference on the burning of the Custom House on 25 May 1921, following a major attack by the Dublin Brigade of the IRA. The attack on the building, which houses the Department of Local Government, was intended to be a substantial show of strength, and a departure from the guerrilla tactics usually favoured by the IRA during the War of Independence; given the capture of the large numbers of Volunteers in the aftermath mean that is usually considered to be a military failure. Organised by Liz Gillis and Mícheál Ó Doibhlín with support from the Office of Public Works however, the eighth instalment of this conference will discuss a wide range of issues arising from the attack.

Admission free but booking essential.

Speakers including historians Seán Hogan (author), Las Fallon (two books), Paul O’Brien (eight books), Liz Gillis, Mícheál Ó Doibhilín and Ernest McCall will present the results of their research into the attack, the background to it and its consequences.
There will be talks on a variety of aspects of the attack and a full programme will be posted here as soon as possible.
Light refreshments will be provided at lunchtime courtesy of the Custom House, and the event is supported by Dublin City Council.
