Signs of Hope – A continuing series April 27, 2017

Gewerkschaftler suggested this recently:
I suggest this blog should have a regular (weekly) slot where people can post happenings at the personal or political level that gives them hope that we’re perhaps not going to hell in a handbasket as quickly as we thought. Or as the phlegmatic Germans put it “hope dies last”.
Any contributions this week?
For the academics and scholars among you who are continually frustrated by rent-extracting publishers and their paywals there is Unpaywall a browser-plugin that searches for non-paywalled versions of the paper you want to read.

The Dagestani Truckers’ Strike Seems to Be Going Well Enough
There has been a strike in the Republic of Dagestan over the Plato road toll system for the past few weeks. The strikers have presented their demands this week.
There are serious parallels between this strike and the Water charges in Ireland, e.g. media blackouts, crony privatizations and so on.
The Irish Left should be showing support IMHO.
As an aside, I always wonder at how ignorant many Irish people are about events in the North Caucasus, given how similar their history is to ours.
They seem more familiar with our history judging from several conversations over the Internet. One Circassian guy remarked unprompted how Russian cossacks can be more brutal than Ulster Loyalists. I had originally noted that Scotland showed that Russia’s concerns that Chechnya’s independence would eventually cause Tatarstan to leave with their oil were real.

Forgot to mention that Dagestan is part of the Russian Federation !

My ma was in Dagestan a couple of times and made some firm friends. ‘Very like the Irish’ were, I’m afraid, her exact words

Preparing for May day NYC.
“With less than a week to go before a major May Day celebration hits the city in honor of International Workers Day, labor strife is all around the Big Apple.”
http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/labor-strife-nyc-prior-day-celebration-article-1.3099913
“Actions planned for Monday are a direct response to President Donald Trump’s policies on labor and immigration, according to organizers. The main event is a rally and concert in Foley Square at 5:00 p.m., but the rest of the day will be busy as well, with actions, teach-ins and union rallies, starting as early as 7:15 a.m.”

The normal trades union and anti-capitalist demos will be supplemented by actions against the AfD who have had brass neck to call a ‘grill-party’ on our day.

They seem to be falling apart big time. I’d say they will be grilling each other.
