A friend of mine – who’d emigrated from Britain to the US – once said that the Americans had just as clear-cut a class system as us, it’s just that they didn’t call it class; they called it race.
I wonder if that’s the subtext of ‘middle class’ here – in effect Clinton (in the great tradition of southern Democrats) was doing a Jack Straw and addressing the very real concerns of the white working class…
