Mentioned in comments last weekend but for anyone who missed it… New Irish Writing in the Independent and this lovely piece.
Speaking of which, any suggestions on other good new Irish writing?
Thanks for the support Wbs.
I’ve had the strange experience this week of encouraging people to click on an Irish Independent piece!

For those interested, there are numerous Irish periodicals publishing short stories. When they get a little press coverage it often emphasises the benefit this is for writers, giving them a platform for their work. But that misses the more important point – I think – of being a great resource for readers.
Plugging away at this for years (in fact decades) has been the Stinging Fly, which now enjoys international status but is still hard to find on Irish bookshop shelves. Also good is Southword. And in recent years, Banshee.
All available online, for a few quid.

I have a subscription to the Stinging Fly – I signed up after the son had a couple of his poems published in it. He was in the same class in college as Sally Rooney. Reckons he talked to her about twice over the four years.
Anyway, Stinging Fly is excellent. Great stories and prose and poetry. A few issues back there was a very funny pisstake of ‘far left’ activism/politics. I found it very funny but funny is in the eye of the beholder. One great line I remember described the group doing a leaflet drop or something in Stoneybatter – so a drop to all the hipsters & co – while the working class all lived in estates in Fingal and Drogheda.

and also good is the Stinging Fly Podcast. https://stingingfly.org/category/podcast/
Perfect for the commute, or for a walk with the dog, I find.

I’ve been writing forever, Fergal, with very little published. But it keeps me out of trouble…

Yes, that explains the country’s collapsing crime rate!😉
Although, getting into trouble might be no bad thing for writer… 😂
